Age of Aquarius
Miriam Yeung Chin-wah has been heralded as one of the most admired pop divas among generation X and millennials. Her sweet-as-candy, girl-next-door charm synched perfectly between starring roles in likeable romcoms like Love Undercover and popular tunes penned with star lyricists like Albert Leung Wai-man and Wyman Wong Wai-man. Yeung has resided in the collective consciousness of millennials within Asia and the Asian diaspora for the last two decades.
My Beautiful Live Miriam Yeung World Tour Macao could not come at a better time for millennials entering their 30s or the preceding generation to cop a huge dose of nostalgia. The concert opened with her most iconic number, Unfortunately, My Star Sign is Aquarius, to an eruption of cheers and was closely followed by Little City, Big Event to equal enthusiasm.
The tempo picked up with the 2004 hit Kisses Everywhere followed by Fierce Lady. Yeung later emerged in a stunning rainbow tulle frock to deliver Lip Biting, one of the most memorable tunes from her much-loved film, Love Undercover 2 starring alongside Daniel Wu Yin-cho.
It was an amazing evening in which the Hong Kong star performed almost 30 songs, with a six-song encore that kept the crowd at fever pitch. Everyone knew almost every word to every tune, singing along throughout the concert. The night ended with her legendary karaoke number, Bad Girl Biography, in which the music video features – you guessed it – Daniel Wu.
While Wu is busy starring in Hollywood films and television shows such as Into The Badlands, Yeung balances her stardom with her family life here in Hong Kong. Those who viewed the show are unlikely to forget the times and tunes that Miriam Yeung played in their lives.
