Village People and Björn Again hit The Venetian Macao
“Macho types wanted: must dance and have a moustache”. So read the advertisement for permanent members of the Village People when they started
out in the late 1970s. That’s the recipe they’ve remained faithful to for four
decades, and the one they brought to The Venetian Theatre in May for their 40th anniversary tour.
It was a night to remember: an outrageously fun jaunt back to the times served up by the US disco icons, with the support of ABBA tribute group Björn Again. As expected, the two acts delivered.
Being veteran performers themselves, Björn Again relished the task of warming up the crowd – and if you want to get an audience moving, could there be a better feel-good anthem than Dancing Queen?
But it was the arrival of the sexy sextet that really drove the crowd wild.
Two of the original 1977 line-up – Felipe Rose (native American) and Alex
Briley (soldier) – were there, plus 1979 Village People veteran Ray Simpson
(cop), resulting in a heroes’ welcome. When you’re responsible for the world’s
cheekiest showstoppers – reaching a high point with In the Navy and Y.M.C.A.
– the bottom line is that the audience needs no encouragement to join in.
