Macao's Monkey King show blends dance, martial arts and hi-tech special effects

Stunning all-action live version of the Chinese classical tale opens at Sands Cotai Theatre

It’s finally here: the epic fantasy Monkey King – China Show has arrived in Macao. The production blends dance, acrobatics, drama, martial arts and hi-tech effects to bring you a live-action extravaganza unlike anything you’ve seen.

Monkey King is a theatrical adaptation of Tang dynasty monk Xuan Zang’s beloved tale, Journey to the West, one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. The story has been told and retold countless times over the centuries, in books, comics, television shows and on the big screen, but Beijing Huayan Group’s production is perhaps the most ambitious version to date, featuring world-class choreography, state-of-the-art lighting technology, stunning original music and spectacular costume design.

Since opening in February, Monkey King has received rave reviews, with Yangtse Evening Post describing it as “grand and splendid; the visual effect is stunning”; Sohu Fashion reported Monkey King is “something the like of which you have never seen before.”

Monkey King has made its home at Sands Cotai Theatre, a 1,700- seat auditorium purpose-built for the production. Sands Style has been given exclusive access to Monkey King, so over the coming year we’ll be bringing you behind-the-scenes looks at the show, going backstage to meet the stars and creative minds who bring this epic to life. Book your tickets now, and take the exhilarating journey of a lifetime.
