Tsai Chin, Original Diva with powerful performance at The Venetian Macao Cotai Arena
There are divas – such as Sammi Cheng, A-Mei and the late Anita Mui – who entertain crowds with energetic dance tracks, classic ballads and all-round stage presence. And then there is a different breed like Tsai Chin, who really only needs her legendary voice and iconic gold microphone to take your breath away.
The audience was a calmer and more experienced crowd, but when the 61-year-old chanteuse’s voice rang through The Venetian Macao Cotai Arena with famous classics from her youth such as Mysterious Lady, First Love Girl and To Wait Devotedly, the collective excitement and awe was palpable.
Tsai knew her audience as she performed Canto and Mandopop covers of tunes by dearly missed singers Mui and Teresa Teng such as Intimate Lover and The Moon Represents My Heart.
The beloved “Patti Page of Taiwan” brought the audience along on a musical journey. Tsai would introduce each number by enlightening the crowd and telling us why certain songs were arranged a specific way, when to pay attention to the lyrics, and why a certain song was dear to her heart. The performance was like a museum tour where the curator and the art – in this case the music – is given a deeper level of appreciation because of context.
Tsai Chin ended the show with a gracious pledge that she would continue singing for as long as she was able to because she sings with her life and soul, and every fibre of her being. And judging by the reaction of the crowd, her fans will listen to her again until we no longer can, too.
